FDA Removes Zantac From Shelves Due to Probable Carcinogen NDMA

In April 2020, the FDA found that Zantac posed a public health risk because it contained high levels of NDMA, a chemical known to induce cancer in lab animals and used in the production of rocket fuel. Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classify NDMA as a probable human carcinogen
The FDA’s allowable daily intake of NDMA is 96 nanograms, but testing revealed that each Zantac tablet contained over 3,000,000 nanograms, exceeding the limit by 3,000 times.
Despite making billions from Zantac, its manufacturers knew about the presence of NDMA as early as 1981 but failed to inform consumers, healthcare providers, or regulators, prioritizing profits over consumer safety.
